Update: Cyclone Gabrielle

Kia ora e te whānau,

We have continued to monitor information that has been sent to us on the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle. Based on the latest information from Auckland Emergency Management and Civil Defence, we have taken the decision that Newton Central School will remain closed tomorrow – Tuesday 14th February. This decision is in line with all the schools in our local area who have also decided to remain closed.

We acknowledge the difficulties that this presents to families and so again, it is not a decision we took lightly. The safety of our students and staff is paramount. Cyclones are unpredictable and with our unique landscape including our ngāhere and the access to our kura on Monmouth Street, the risks that strong gusts and rain could potentially pose are too great.

We will send a further update by 4pm on Tuesday afternoon about returning to school on Wednesday. We hope to be able to reopen to minimise the inconvenience to our community, however we will need time to assess any potential damage to our kura.

Please continue to monitor and follow all advice from Auckland Emergency Management and Civil Defence.

Stay safe
